We invite you to come and share the history and grand elegance of the inn. One of the original 13 properties of Tappahannock which dates back to 1705; the Inn is ideally situated for a historical stroll of the village whose Native American name meant "town on the rise and fall of water". St. Margaret's school for girls is conveniently located across the street from the inn and a historic walking tour starts on the doorstep of The Essex. Within a block or two there are many antique stores and several restaurants including Lowry's, a Tappahannock tradition since the 1940s.

Many recreational activities are also available close to our beautiful Virginia bed and breakfast. Play a round of golf,  go fishing or cruising on the Rappahannock River. Canoe up many unspoiled creeks, go biking in town and along beautiful country roads. Explore nearby Urbanna or Irvington. Enjoy a wine tasting at Ingleside winery or one of the ten other wineries in the area.

Day trips to the many civil war sites or historic attractions include Colonial Williamsburg, Fredericksburg and the StratfordHall plantation.

While rural, Tappahannock, VA is conveniently located two hours from Washington, DC, two and a half hours from Baltimore, and an hour from Richmond.

The Essex Inn was the first bed and breakfast to be accepted into Virginia's Green Lodging Program. Green Lodging encourages hotels, resorts, and inns to be aware of their impact on the Environment and to take steps to reduce these impacts.

The Inn offers guestrooms in the main house and suites in "The Quarters"  which is a separate building that was once used as the servants' quarters.

All rooms and suites have cable TV, WiFi, individually controlled A/C and heat, hair dryers, irons, smooth-as-silk ironed sheets, plenty of oversized soft towels and our custom amenities. A full, three-course gourmet breakfast is included and served 8-10 am.

Main House Rooms: These spacious rooms are all located on the second floor of the house accessible by stairs only. They feature custom-made four-poster beds and gas fireplaces or electric fireplace stoves.

Suites in The Quarters: The suites are perfect for extended stays; guests needing two separate beds; guests with pets; and guests needing outside access to smoke. Each suite features its own outside entrance, a separate sitting room with a sofa bed or day bed, bedroom, bathroom, full kitchen and a gas or electric fireplace. 

Guests staying in the suites may opt for an extended continental breakfast provided en suite. Maximum of 3 people per suite.

  • All rates include breakfast and afternoon snacks including wine and beer on tap; are subject to a 7% tax; and may be changed.
  • Adding a third person to a room is $35.00 extra. Well-behaved children over the age of 2 are welcome. None of our rooms will accommodate more than 3 people.
  • The Inn welcomes pets with prior approval at $30 per night in our suites only. Please inquire our pet policy when making your reservation.
  • Advanced reservations are recommended. Room guarantee - we accept Visa, Master Card,  Discover and AMEX.
  • We have a seven day (one week) cancellation policy. If your must cancel your reservation, please cancel at least 7 days prior to the first day of your reservation. Reservations cancelled within 7 days will be subject to a charge equal to the full reservation cost.
  • A two-night minimum stay is required on weekends all year round.
  • Check-in is 3 PM - 10 PM. 
  • Check-out is 11 AM.
  • Smoking is permitted outside and on the porches and patios only.
  • Candles are prohibited.
  • Weekly and Monthly rates are available. Corporate rates are also available for businesses needing at least 12 room nights a year. Please contact us for details.
Getting Here

From 360 East:
Follow 360 through town until the intersection of 360/17. Turn right onto 360, (Queen Street). Go two blocks. Turn right onto Water Lane and go 2 blocks to Duke St. The Essex Inn is on the corner of Water Lane and Duke St and faces Duke St.

From 17 South: At the first light in Tappahannock, (the water tower is on the right), turn left onto 360 (Queen St.) Go two blocks. Turn right onto Water Lane and go 2 blocks to Duke St. The Essex Inn is on the corner of Water Lane and Duke St and faces Duke St.

From 360 West: After coming off the bridge, turn left at the corner of Water Lane. Go two blocks to Duke Street. Inn is on the corner of Water Lane and Duke.
