Many recreational activities are also available close to our beautiful Virginia bed and breakfast. Play a round of golf,  go fishing or cruising on the Rappahannock River. While rural, Tappahannock, VA is conveniently located two hours from Washington, DC, two and a half hours from Baltimore, and an hour from Richmond.

The Inn offers guestrooms in the main house and suites in "The Quarters"  which is a separate building that was once used as the servants' quarters.

All rooms and suites have cable TV, WiFi, individually controlled A/C and heat, hair dryers, irons, smooth-as-silk ironed sheets, plenty of oversized soft towels and our custom amenities. A full, three-course gourmet breakfast is included and served 8-10 am.

Main House Rooms: These spacious rooms are all located on the second floor of the house accessible by stairs only. They feature custom-made four-poster beds and gas fireplaces or electric fireplace stoves.

Suites in The Quarters: The suites are perfect for extended stays; guests needing two separate beds; guests with pets; and guests needing outside access to smoke. Each suite features its own outside entrance, a separate sitting room with a sofa bed or day bed, bedroom, bathroom, full kitchen and a gas or electric fireplace. 

Guests staying in the suites may opt for an extended continental breakfast provided en suite. Maximum of 3 people per suite.

• All rates include breakfast and afternoon snacks including wine and beer on tap; are subject to a 7% tax; and may be changed.
• Adding a third person to a room is $35.00 extra. Well-behaved children over the age of 2 are welcome. None of our rooms will accommodate more than 3 people.
• The Inn welcomes pets with prior approval at $30 per night in our suites only. Please inquire our pet policy when making your reservation.
• Advanced reservations are recommended. Room guarantee - we accept Visa, Master Card,  Discover and AMEX.
• We have a seven day (one week) cancellation policy. If your must cancel your reservation, please cancel at least 7 days prior to the first day of your reservation. Reservations cancelled within 7 days will be subject to a charge equal to the full reservation cost.
• A two-night minimum stay is required on weekends all year round.
• Check-in is 3 PM - 10 PM. 
• Check-out is 11 AM.
• Smoking is permitted outside and on the porches and patios only.
• Candles are prohibited.

From 17 South: At the first light in Tappahannock, (the water tower is on the right), turn left onto 360 (Queen St.) Go two blocks. Turn right onto Water Lane and go 2 blocks to Duke St. The Essex Inn is on the corner of Water Lane and Duke St and faces Duke St.

From 360 West: After coming off the bridge, turn left at the corner of Water Lane. Go two blocks to Duke Street. Inn is on the corner of Water Lane and Duke.
